Search for our ideal dog

When we were first looking for a family dog 3 years ago , we did the usual...sat down and crafted a list of desirable traits....our future family companion would be;
  • Intelligent
  • Affectionate Personality
  • Easily Trained
    • Active
    • Low to No shedding
    • Small to Mid-sized
    On re-reading the list we wondered if this amazing canine even existed and resigned to compromise on all but the size, Intelligence and no-shedding traits....  many internet searches later we were overjoyed to learn of a hard-to-find crossbreed called a "Bordoodle" or Borderdoodle" or "Borderpoo" etc. you get the picture.   This cross breed produces the most exceptional family dog and personal companion with amazing attributes that are just not found in other breeds. Additionally, Bordoodles will not need as much exercise as the Border Collie or as much maintenance as the Poodle.

    Further digging revealed that most Bordoodle breeders were on the West Coast which was a deal-breaker for us living in southern Ontario as we wanted to first check out the puppy and his family before bringing this new, life-long pal into our family.  The few breeders in Ontario were breeding Standard size Poodles with Border Collies and the resulting offspring would generally weigh upwards of 60 lbs when full-grown,  which was a much larger pet than we wanted.
    Zoe

    Segue for a moment to my childhood, growing up on a beef cattle farm north of Toronto where my Dad has bred and raised working Border Collies. A well established lineage of bright, hard-working dogs has evolved and so too has a waiting list for each litter. Two years ago he and I decided to purchase, Angus, a very special male stud to service his females and our Zoe when she matured. Angus comes from world class stock, his great grandfather Mirk, won the Calgary Stampede World Stock Dog Championship in 2015 - besting a field of over 100 world`s brightest and fittest dogs.  Angus is still 2yrs old and has matured into a highly intelligent, obedient and exceedingly affectionate adult with a silky black and white coat.

    In the end we decided to play the long game and found a beautiful pure-bred Mini-Poodle with the future goal of breeding our own Bordoodle to be small enough to comfortably fit in our home...a Mini-Bordoodle.

    Zoe, our Mini-Poodle, has been a terrific companion for all of us.  She is affectionate and calm indoors although very athletic when we take her to the park.  She loves to sprint after a tennis ball or frisbee and waits gleefully each afternoon for her daily romp.   Her intelligence is a frequent source of surprise and delight.  It took us a few months to recognize her extensive vocabulary, a range of  mostly single, short barks; eg.  our friend at the door, her friend at the door (another Border Collie `Beau`), want to go outside, want to come inside, food/water bowl is empty, alert! stranger outside.....  She has bonded with each member of our extended family and has joyfully welcomed former friends even after not seeing them in over two years!
